Can Tho City, on October 6, 2022, SNV Netherlands Development Organization in collaboration with the Department of Crop Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, co-organized Provincial Consultation Workshop for the Project “Transforming the rice value chain in response to climate change and sustainable development in the Mekong Delta region” (TRVC). In this workshop, there were more than 80 participants, including representatives of the Netherlands Development Organization, officials of the Department of Crop Production, representatives of the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development of provinces and cities; Agricultural Extension Centers of the provinces; Mekong Delta Rice Institute; Institute for Agriculture Environment, leaders and experts of government agencies and private enterprises.
The workshop was chaired by Mr. Le Thanh Tung - Deputy Director, Department of Crop Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Firstly, Mr. Le Thanh Tung opened the meeting with greetings and thanks for the presence of the delegates at the Provincial Consultation Workshop in Can Tho city.

Then, the representative of SNV Project Management Board - Mr. Peter Loach, SNV Country Director shared:
“The Australian donor is very interested and has a lot of ideas for this project because the project will play a catalytic role in creating a transformation in rice production and trading towards sustainability and bringing inclusive values. boss in the rice-growing provinces in the Mekong Delta; actively contribute to achieving sustainable development adapting to climate change in the Mekong Delta in particular and the country in general.”

Opening the main content of the workshop was a speech from the SNV Project Management Board. Ms. Tran Thu Ha - Project Director of TRVC, shared and updated the process of developing the Project Design, as well as presented the main objectives, mechanisms/participants of the Project, and ongoing studies implemented to support the TRVC Project.

Following the speech from the SNV Project Management Board, Dr. Nguyen Hong Tin - Mekong Delta Development Research Institute presented the report of research's results with the main content being Rapid assessment of the current status of the Rice Value Chain and contemporary rice farming practices in three key rice production areas in An Giang, Dong Thap, and Kien Giang provinces.

At the same time, Dr. Mai Van Trinh - Director of the Institute of Agro-Environment, also gave a speech on the report of Rapid assessment of the status of the existing MRV applied to Rice; analyse and clarify the effects of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on the development of the carbon market in Vietnam. In the speech, Dr. Mai Van Trinh presented the research results - Recommendations on policies and mechanisms to promote the improvement of the policy system to commercialize carbon credits based on the commitments of the countries in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
After listening to 3 presentations, the delegates actively participated in discussions and gave consultative feedbacks on the measurement system report, MRV reporting and appraisal. Based on the presented report results, experts, senior consultants of the Project, representatives from the Department of Crop Production and Center for Agricultural Extension (TTKN) of 3 provinces of An Giang, Dong Thap and Kien Giang; as well as businesses in the Rice value chain have given many constructive and practical feedbacks.

Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong - Director of the Department of Crop Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, synthesized the consultative opinions of the delegates through 2 speeches by Dr. Nguyen Hong Tin (Can Tho University) and Dr. Mai Van Trinh (Institute of Agriculture Environment), and requested Can Tho University and the Institute of Agriculture Environment to complete a summary report to receive the opinions of the delegates.

Speaking at the end of the conference, Mr. Richard Rastall – SNV Agriculture Sector Manager, highly appreciated the results of the original research report of the two research groups and thanked the participation of independent experts and participants.
